home stretch

so I lied. Here are some things I have not uploaded yet but are both based on sketches from my sketchbook. I included the deer with a gun with and without text b/c gary said he did not like the text and felt it competed too much with the image. I will work more with type over break. For now this is a little something.

a cold day in hell a warm day in Atlanta

"you are an illustrator." "Fine art is dead." "Handmade is not going to last, designers create mainly on the computer." "Your work is so personal....you need to take your art out of design"

"Design is about communication and art does not have to communicate anything." -I obviously do not belong in an internship that essentially covers "Las Meninas" in gasoline and lights the match....
I was discouraged about the interview and I have spent the weekend trying to decide if I should use this art blog as another forum for my rantings. I came to the conclusion that because this was an art related personal problem it was acceptable. I am still new to design and art as a practice and I take my superiors advice because they are in the business and they know better than me. But after much consideration I have decided that to give the above sentiments much consideration voids my direction in life...and my entire undergrad career....that is a lot of wasted money. SO I am forging on and like anyone on Behind the Music would say, I'm not going to give up. In addition, a project over the break is going to be to collect rejection letters and work them into a painting....if you have any you are willing to part with let me know (echarrow@gmail.com) I promise to put them to good use.

three book covers hand made and designed for The Bean Trees, Pigs in Heaven, and Animal Dreams. These are the first drafts major and minor changed will probably be taking place. They all have to have inner jacket flaps...you get the idea.

Our Seminar speaker this week was Matt Smith from Tribal DDB Dallas. He made a wonderful statement and so I decided it needed a little illustration. I almost showed it to him, but then I thought....he's going to think I was drawing the whole time...I was. Plus you can't just go up to someone and say "I made this" like a five year old who makes a finger painting for the teacher.

beachy crabby pants

Beach art. A friend stepped on a head blowfish and it broke the skin. It was so weird seeing a dead fish hurt someone...like it came back from the dead.

I have crab paintings but none of them scanned well enough so I will try again later.

some more creative strokes

So it has been a weekend that I am not going to go into but instead post art.
For creative strokes class:

A logo based on the word "saucy." We can do anything so this is a resturant logo mark. I used ink and a dropper for the ladle and a spoon to make the word saucy.

Hopefully the last anorexia poster. I tried playing with color and decided that something more faded is not the way I should go. Ok more will posted laster in the way of beach crabs lots of crabs and some fat people....maybe.

Emerald Isle

Off to the beetch for ze veek end will post when I return on monday. expect to see fat seagulls, things on speedos, and crabs....

Girl Hunter and gathering

Girl Hunter, a photography mag from the 50s, is frightening and yet I cannot tear myself away from the photographs and what we now consider cliche' images. My friend Kevin Scarbrough gave me a disk with hundreds of images from these magazines and it was like channuka in summer. The type is amazing and the content is laughable.

Here is a little something I made from one of the images. I am going to explore the topic further in the coming months:
The bigger one is not as good as the smaller image however the smaller image was a text painting and transfer so of course it turned out better than the larger painting. What can you do.

And here was a warm up painting. I cant help but laugh out loud and make bird noises under my breath when I am painting these so invariably I look a little crazy.

Like a monkey cat in space

The paintings are getting ever more complicated, deep, profound, bottomless, opaque, effervescent....and drippy. Well at least the last part is serious. Gary had me try new things today and I came up with these. There are about 4 more but I decided to post the best and maybe I will post the failures later seeing as this is a liquid desktop (Tropical toxic calls their blog this and I really like the reference). You might recognize the moose as a drawing I posted earlier...it was time to bring the moose head to life.
ps- going to be making a list of links soon....ehem....cough cough....so yeah put me on your list bitches or comment on mine and I will add you to the List of Inequity. that is all.

new image for creative strokes

Here is the updated version of my spoons poster. I condensed my my three poster ideas into one and I think it works more effectively.

2 covers

Here they are whether or not you were waiting with baited breath. I have a feeling that they might change again in terms of masthead placement but I am happy with the masthead itself and the compositions. The 3rd one is giving me problems but I will post it when it works itself out.

publication elation!!

Publication class draft number 364. There are some wonky formatting things going on here, but this gives you an idea of what I am doing. Ignore the white bar on the contents page and in the tornado. They shouldn't be there, and I will make sure the final posting is sans layer errors. The covers have also been updated. This mag. is about every day survival ex: what to do when your car breaks down, brakes go out, or you are in an accident. It is called Heads Up. 3 covers to come.

raw images for publication and creative strokes poster

an image for creative strokes. I am using a line from a poem my friend ester' wrote when she was 15. This image is not working completely yet. It discussing eating disorders but misses some of the extremism leading up to a break down. I created two other images so that this would be part of a tryptic , but I think I can consolidate them into one idea.

a great detail from one of my wood panel paintings. it makes me think of the walls after I try to bake.a tornado image for my publication

an image i made for my publication but it is not a good enough finale so I am dropping it and moving on.Images I made for the publication that I am going to use. They are much more dynamic and interesting.
